Earth Girl
Earth Girl Series
By Janet Edwards
Sci-fi
Fantasy
Teen/Young Adult
Kickin' Female Lead
Man kind has developed portal technology and built new societies on many other planets. The handicapped (those who can not survive on other planets due to an anomaly in their DNA) are left back on Earth to live in the wake of a the great diaspora. As a result of the exodus into the stars, Earth could no longer sustain its vast cities and landscapes with many cities emptying out and crumbling away. Three hundred years later, one Earth bound girl with a love of history decides to take destiny in her own hands. She enrols in an off planet university history degree based on Earth and pretends to be a 'Norm' in an effort to prove that 'Apes' are just as intelligent, if not more so, than those who live in the stars.
Our main character in this story is Jarra, a young adult embarking on a fight for independence and ends up biting off more than she can chew. She is incredibly capable, independent and passionate about Earth and its history.
Its not everyday that I find a truly unique story set in a fantastic world. Earth Girl has it all – sci-fi, fantasy, strong characters, thrilling rescues and that was just the first book. I loved how Janet Edwards sets up a world where a young woman is literally trapped on Earth and longs to see the other worlds humanity has colonised. But she can't, and she ends up finding herself in an unlikely situation because of her extremely strong sense of injustice.
I love that the main vocation that our characters have is a kick arse twist on archaeology sit digging. Envision whole cities crumbling into the past, locking away hundreds of years worth of lost information and a bunch of young students learning how to excavate these dig site using furistic lifting beams and hover platforms. I loved it! It really did appeal to my inner geek.
This story is book one in a trilogy that shows just how far Jarra is willing to go to get to the stars and unbound from her planet Earth. Definately a great Teen/YA read!
I gave this book 4.5 stars.
