The Paper Magician is a wonderful story of redemption, adventure, good vs evil and coming of age. Throw in a whole lot of magic and you have a fantastic magical world. Set at the turning of the 20th century in London, England, the story follows the adventures of one Miss Ceony Twill as she begins her apprenticeship with the enigmatic Magician Emery Thane who is one of only twelve paper magicians in all the country. But it is with a heavy heart that Ceony begins her training, for she had her mind set on becoming a Smelter Magician so she could work with metals, but was asked to becoming a paper magician, bond with paper and be forever a magician of paper only.

But paper magic turns out to be far marvellous to Ceony than she ever had imagined and the learning was more interesting to her than she ever thought. Working and learning under Mg. Thane becomes a delight as they create magical paper creatures and breathe life into them, create snow flakes and breathe coldness into them and watch them fall.

Then Mg. Thane is called away for almost a week leaving Ceony worried about her mentor and guide and when he arrives back be brings with him a danger that neither of them ever thought possible which thrusts Ceony on her greatest adventure ever.

I loved Ceony as a character. She is witty, intelligent and completely delightful. In the process of discovering her mentor's hopes, dreams and inner darkness, she uncovers her own in a way that brings about the answers they both need to find freedom.

Set in a lovely historical world of the 1900s, the characters do play their part very nicely. The language is lovely and the mannerisms make for a really good read. The pace was good, neither too slow or so crazy fast that you wouldn't keep up. I enjoyed the Paper Magician and will continue with the series.

5 stars out of 5 for a really good read.
