An ordinary girl from an ordinary life, Samantha Rousseau spends her days studying biology and watching out for her father. More at home in books and biology than gossip and fashion, Samantha is at a complete loss when an invitation to dine with the duchess from a small European country arrives. Believing it to be an offer of contribution to her master's programme, she is shocked to discover that the duchess is her grandmother, and that Sam is the last remaining heir to a fortune.
Shocked, bewildered, and a little betrayed by her father, Samantha takes up the offer to visit Lilaria, flying first class of course, putting her study on hold for the semester.
What she finds is a world so unlike she has ever imagined, with gorgeous people in gorgeous gowns and suits, the rich and powerful, leaders of the country all watching her, waiting for her to fall flat on her face. Then there is the crown prince, heir to the throne and the country's biggest player. He happens to be the closest thing she finds in a friend, and interestingly enough, she actually likes him.
I loved this New College version of the Princess Diaries. It is funny watching her come to terms with high fashion and accessories, how and who to curtsy and which fork goes with which dish. Nichole Chase has created a character you just love to cheer. I really enjoyed reading this story, a great one to add to your list of light summer reading.
A lovely romantic, easy going read. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
