Kickin' Female Lead
Jane Ellsworth lives with her family in Dorchester, in Regency England. As important as it is to marry well, being able to dress a sitting room or a dining hall in glamour is regarded highly among other skills for ladies of good birth, and this is no different for Jane. But it seems that every male suitor that enters the parlour of the Ellsworth home have eyes only for Jane's more genteel and pretty sister, Melody.
All Jane ever wants to do it learn her magic, to use glamour in a way that that only the grand glamourists can achieve. To be able to see into the ether and to adjust the strands of glamour that surround everything, this is what delights Jane's heart the most. But if she will not be allowed to study, to learn her magical art, and is required to marry instead, well she doesn't know what will become of her.
I loved Shades of Milk and Honey. Reminiscent of Jane Austin's beautiful stories, it has the ability to transport me to a life and times that is far different from today. Kowel has crafted a story that highlights the social norms for the Regency era but has woven in an element of magic called glamour that makes this series stand apart from your usual historical romance.
And Jane Ellsworth is a character of charm and strength. She isn't your usual spinster, with no care for anything or anyone. No, Jane cares very much for her family and her glamour. So when tragedy strikes, threatening her family's good name, she takes it upon herself to make amends, and finds love in the most unexpected of places along the way.
There are five books in the Glamourist Histories and all of them are crafted just as beautifully as the first. I enjoyed the era, the magic, the mystery and the adventure of reading Kowel's novels.
5 out of 5 stars for Shades of Milk and Honey, 5 out of 5 for the series.
