Aris loves only three things in life. Her family, her boyfriend, Calix and flying. Everything feels so good when she is up in the air in her wingjet flying over fields, ocean and her local township. But all that changes the day Calix is drafted into the war and Aris is visited by a recruiter for the elite Search and Rescue Unit. Flying without him in her life just doesn't feel right any more and so she decides to take the recruiter up on his offer, only there is a catch – she has to disguise herself as a man for the Atalantan army will not let women fight in the war.
When Aris leaves home, she gives up everything for the chance at finding Calix on the front line, including safety and the ability to be herself. Working along side men in the search and rescue unit is difficult at best, especially since she has had to get rid of her limp, damage she got on her leg from a crash as a little girl. The stress of hiding in plane sight, trying to find her best friend and dodging a ruthless enemy, it all gets on top of a girl at times. Then she starts falling for her sergeant and things getting really turbulent.
I loved reading Aris' story. She is the kind of girl that knew what she thought she wanted in life and was determined to keep it close at hand. Even though her childhood accident left her injured and unable to walk properly, she was determined to get back on the horse, so to speak, and in doing so, she discovered a love of flying like no other. But it was this same injury that posed the greatest threat to her physical training and disguise as a man for the Alalantan army wouldn't take anyone who was crippled. She forged through the pain and exhaustion to come out the other side ready to head to war, only to discover that the physical training didn't stop once she entered into the Search and Rescue Unit.
But she was determined and persistent and became one of the best pilots the army, in any division, has ever seen. But it is this reputation that gets her into trouble when the crap hits the fan.
I really enjoyed Rebel Wing, reading about a life and times that I've not come across before. The story was unique enough and the action thrilling enough that I ended up reading the story in one sitting. I enjoyed the battle scenes, the relationships formed with her unit mates and the greater conflict that unfolds as the story goes along.
Plenty of adventure, loads of action, heaps of suspense and lots of romance.
5 stars out of 5 for Rebel Wing, am looking forward to reading and reviewing the next two books in the series.
